  1. Just heard about the project on 25C3. The idea seems to be very similiar with http://www.codecheck.info/ maybe it’s an idea to collaborate with them.

  2. Thanks for the hint! The motivation behind both projects is similar but the approach is different. We want to make the information available in an open, non-silo way. codecheck.info could use our information at some point the for their information site.

  3. Hi, I just saw your 25c3 presentation (catching up cause I missed it live after the long night :P ) and just checked the codecheck.info…. and it seems pretty much that what you want with your project, the only difference is that you would like the software to be open source? is that right?
Coz from the usability site it’s pretty nice done at their site, it’s also wiki like, that you can add the new products by yourself, and edit the ones on, etc. they implemented webcam use for the product pics (not bad idea taking in count the have a .mobile site) –which didnt work in my case– and automatically ask for the producers name through th EAN code…
when you finish adding the product or fin the produkt, it tells/warns you about ingedrients which are considered “bedenklich” and so on…

The idea would be nice of course would be to add data to each specific ingredient of the given product. I mean-> At the moment they have it in general (what Zitronensäure is), but it would be nice to know where that zitronensäure cam from (for this specificall product)

Anyways, I find your idea nice, and I’m working in something similar, but like I’ve said, don’t invent the wheel again, these codecheck guys have a pretty nice startup, the thing is to convince them to open and expand the system

    take care

  4. Hey World Thinker,

I have also a little bit of a 25C3 backlog. :) Many thanks for your feedback! As said above: It is not only that the software should be open-source, but more importantly that the data set itself is available and usable without any restrictions.

The feature you mentioned – the precise description of the source of an ingredient – is planned to be included (but optional as not every producer want/can give this information).

I will go on with the conception of ProductTransparency and will then talk to similar projects for sure. What is your project that you were mentioning with “I’m working in something similar”?

  6. mmmm, I guess you meant open information coz of the following (in codecheck)

But like I said in my comment b4 “these codecheck guys have a pretty nice startup, the thing is to convince them to open and expand this system”, It might be though, but maybe they’re interested in joining forces if you give them any winning option (naming help programming or whatever)

    take care ;)

  7. Yup, they are locking away the (user generated) data – that’s the problem.

  8. Greatings,
    not bad…

    Thanks

  9. A feed (Atom / RSS) for this blog would be cool …

  10. Oh, how could I missed that! Thanks neb, the current WordPress theme did not have a RSS link in the header. I fixed that now.
